Bayern made it through to the knockout stage of the competition after finishing second to Bordeaux in Group A, with three wins a draw and two losses. It was their 1-4 victory over Juventus in December that stamped Bayern’s ticket out of the Group Stage.

A much anticipated encounter with Manchester United awaited the German side. Once again a 4-4 aggregate in the home and away matches saw Bayern go though on the away goals rule, this time to the semi-finals, with Bayern’s two goals at Old Trafford proving fatal for Manchester United, even though Bayern lost on the night.
The victory over Manchester United set up a semi-final encounter with Olympique Lyonnais, whoRibery and van Gaal. Bayern squeezed past Lyon 1-0 in the first leg in Munich, but issued the French squad a thorough trouncing 0-3 in the return leg on a hat trick by Croatian striker Ivica Olic.

Unfortunately for Bayern, however, French international midfielder Franck Ribery was red carded for an aggressive challenge in the first leg. And although his team now find themselves in the final in Madrid on Saturday, Ribery won’t be on the field with them. His three match ban has been upheld in spite of desperate efforts by the club to appeal the conviction.
